I recently announced the launch of my latest program, Writer’s Craft Academy INTENSIVE (WCAI), and it’s been exciting to see people’s response.
WCAI is a three month program featuring live online workshop training and group coaching taught and facilitated by a team of writing, publishing and book marketing veterans, including writing and life coach Doug Kurtz, publicist and literary agent Rachel Sentes, and, of course, yours truly.
A lot of writers and aspiring authors seem really excited about what we are offering, which is great!
But here is the thing…
When Rachel, Doug, and I sat down a few months back to start brainstorming what Writer’s Craft Academy INTENSIVE was going to be all about, we didn’t start by discussing mechanics, content, or marketing strategy.
Instead, we had a discussion about values and beliefs.
As veterans in the writing instruction, publishing, and book marketing fields, we’ve seen all kinds of quick-fix solutions and accelerated approaches offered up to both aspiring and experienced authors.
Whether its one-size-fits-all formulas for creative writing, or Amazon algorithm hacks that will send your book flying to the top of the charts, we know the types of things writers want to hear about in the marketing for a writing course or book marketing training program.
But we also know most of those things just don’t work.
Writing is novel is an artistic process, and there are no easy answers or secret formulas.
There is just passion, strategy, foundational skills-sets, community, and commitment.
That’s why, before we determined what we were going to teach, we first developed a manifesto outlining what we believe.
This is where we landed…
We, the WCAI faculty, believe...
- There is no single "right way" to create and market a book, and no single road map anyone has to follow to achieve success.
- No one guru has all the answers, and multiple perspectives provide a richer and more nuanced understanding of the craft.
- Traditional publishing is the correct path for some writers, while other writers are better served by independent or hybrid publishing.
- Every writer works on their own timeline and while a great book may get written in three months, it may also take three years.
- The energy and enthusiasm found in a writing retreat can be recreated online and continued over a three month sprint.
- Community, coaching, accountability, and craft training should work hand-in-hand to support long-term success and skill development in writing and publishing, not serve as gateway for short-term gains.
